Cheap Food is an Illusion
Cheap Food is an Illusion
One of my favorite quotes from the movie Food Inc. is “Cheap food is an illusion”. It’s true. There is a scene in the movie that really hits me where a family is forced to chose between food that is good for them and food that is affordable for their modest budget. This is a choice American’s shouldn’t have to make. Healthy and wholesome food shouldn’t be an indulgence but a right. And it would be if our food system worked correctly. In reality, we spend more money subsidizing heavily processed junk foods and the costs of related health problems in this country than the federal government even brings in on corporate income taxes.
The $.99 menu at your corner fast food restaurant won’t be going away anytime soon, but you will start to see a seismic shift in restaurant menu planning and over-arching restaurant menu trends as a result of this and other recent food documentaries.
